the meaning of the fan
We are students from "Istituto Magistrale De Amicis " Cuneo and we saw your play "Lady Windremere's Fan" on 14th January in Turin. We couldn't stay at the debate after the play because our coach was leaving to Cuneo straight away, so we'd like to tell you how much we enjoyed your performance. You were great! All of you were professional but especially the actor who acted as Parker was athletic, and very funny in his changing roles. We were even able to understand what the actors said, so...amazing! We wondered why the fan changed colour. We've tried to find an answer and we'd want you to tell us what u think of our interpretations. The fan changed colour according to the situation and the characters' mood. It was green when Lady Windermere doubted his husband; it became orange when she seemed to accept by Lord Darlington's flattering and proposal; it's covered with feathers when everything is cleared up and it is finally big when Mrs. Erlynne wants it because it meant a lot to her. Bravo! again. Thanks for entertaining us so funnily!

Hi

Thanks for your message, they are really appreciated when we are on the road, as it can get a bit tough sometimes. But on the whole it has been amazing.

Your ideas about the fan are brilliant that is certainly something we were trying to convey. We though very carefully about what we, as individuals, believed the fan represented and we came up with so many different things.

The colour codes and signs are right, we wanted them to reflect or indicated the changing moods and situtations of Lady Windermere. Another thing that was really important is that we believe the fan represents the harsh and strict rules of the society that Lady Windermere lives in. At the beginning of the play, she believes in good and bad and nothing else. people are good or bad. there is nothing in between. as the play progresses and she finds herself tempted she begins to mature and become an adult. at the end of the play she realises that there are grey areas and people cannot be good or bad all the time.

And so she gives her fan away. as she changes her opinions and moves away from the structured beliefs of society the fan changes.

I hope this helped and didn't confuse something that you already understood very well. Thanks for the message and we're really chuffed you enjoyed the play.
